As a Mac based Virtual Assistant, I have some favorite applications that I use on a daily basis. Some of which are highlighted below.
Mac Specialist wrote an interesting article about their take on the subject.
- BusySync by BusyMac is one of my top of the line applications that I use. It effortlessly syncs iCal with Google Calendar, thus enabling me to maintain client calendars on my iCal by simply having them share their calendars with me. BusySync allows you to have full editing rights whereas in the past one could only subscribe to, but not edit, other’s iCals, in this type of home office/small business scenario.
- This little beauty doesn’t get a lot of press, but I cannot begin to tell you how it saved the day for me a few months ago. I needed to create about 100 folders for a client of mine, all named with various student names, which were on a plain text (.txt) file. This app performed masterfully, and saved me a ton of work.
- PDFpen PRO, by Smile on my Mac, is the one application that I use each and every day. It offers much of the functionality of the full version of Acrobat, at fraction of the cost.
A newer application I have just started using is Bento, by Filemaker. It is their new personal database, and incorporates Address Book, and iCal into a project management interface. I personally like to think of it as a “lite” version of Filemaker Pro. It offers colorful and stunning themes to personalize the program (although I do hope with future updates they offer more choices with many different themes).
How do I find these apps? Well, more often than not, their identity surfaces when one of my Mac clients comes to me with a project that they need a software solution for. So initially they all came to me out of need, but ultimately they have worked their way into my daily arsenal of tools that I use as a Virtual Assistant on the Mac OS X platform.

Hi Taryn,
I think you should check out TextExpander, too, if you don’t already use it. I love it, and have already saved many hours using it for the past couple month.
